Income tax basics

Learn how an income-tax model uses taxable income and rate logic, and why country, tax year and inputs determine the result.

Relevant tool

Income tax calculator

Model income tax by country and tax period.

The calculator models personal income tax for tax residents through fixed country and tax-year engines. It is neither a net-pay calculator nor a tax return, and the website language does not select the tax country.

What the model calculates

The calculator models personal income tax for tax residents through fixed country and tax-year engines. It is neither a net-pay calculator nor a tax return, and the website language does not select the tax country.

Inputs and available paths

The current engines are Germany 2026, France (2025 income/2026 assessment), Spain 2025, Italy 2026 and the United Kingdom 2026/27. Inputs include annualised monthly gross pay, annual gross pay or a direct taxable-income basis, plus only the country-specific choices shown by the page.

Calculation model

Germany, France and Spain provide single and married paths with a separately entered second person. France also uses children; Spain uses region and age; Italy uses region; the United Kingdom uses England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland. A direct tax basis is marked as such only when both partners use that direct input in a joint calculation.

Implemented relation

Average rate = modelled income tax ÷ tax base × 100.

How the paths work

Gross-pay entries are estimates from gross income because social contributions and individual deductions are not fully calculated. The engines apply only their documented tariff scope: for example, no German solidarity surcharge or church tax, no French credits or social charges, and no UK National Insurance, savings or dividend taxation.

Checked example

The average rate relates modelled tax to the tax base. It must not be read as the rate that would apply to the next additional unit of income; the tool does not display a separate marginal-rate result.

The output is a modelled income-tax amount and an average rate for the selected country/year engine. It is not a separate marginal-rate result or a net-pay calculation.

Assumptions, display and interpretation

The official-source review stored in the project is dated 08.08.2026. The tool has no runtime tax API and does not automatically update its country/year rules. The remaining amount is deliberately not labelled net pay.

Scope and limits

Country engines exclude many individual facts, deductions and local rules; unsupported Spanish regions include Navarra and País Vasco. Use the output only as a versioned model result, not as tax, legal, payroll or filing advice.
