Retirement planning

Learn how starting capital, contributions, time, assumed returns, inflation and withdrawals interact in retirement-planning models.

Relevant tool

Retirement calculator

Plan private retirement capital and income.

The calculator projects an entered saving and withdrawal scenario from current age through a chosen planning age. It is a deterministic capital model, not a pension forecast or retirement recommendation.

What the model calculates

The calculator projects an entered saving and withdrawal scenario from current age through a chosen planning age. It is a deterministic capital model, not a pension forecast or retirement recommendation.

Inputs and available paths

It calculates an accumulation phase from initial savings, monthly contributions, retirement age and an assumed annual return. The retirement path additionally considers a desired income in today’s money, inflation, a post-retirement return, target capital and a sustainable monthly withdrawal within the chosen horizon.

Calculation model

The annual return is converted to an equivalent monthly rate. In accumulation, the service applies monthly return before adding the contribution at month end. Desired income is escalated to retirement start by the entered inflation assumption; during retirement the balance earns the entered return and withdrawals grow monthly with inflation.

Implemented relation

Monthly return = (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1; each accumulation month applies return first and then adds the contribution at period end.

How the paths work

When capital reaches zero, the projection stops rather than creating debt. Target capital, surplus/shortfall and sustainable withdrawal are different outputs of the same fixed horizon, not independent guarantees.

Checked example

The fixed age-40 example distinguishes paid contributions from projected gain. The second service case uses €2,000 of present-day monthly income, 2% inflation and 2% retirement return to show why the nominal withdrawal at retirement is higher.

Age 40, no initial savings, €1,550/month to age 65 at 4%: capital €788,714.59, contributions €465,000 and gain €323,714.59.

Assumptions, display and interpretation

There is no automatic state pension, occupational pension, life expectancy, tax, fee, asset allocation, Monte-Carlo simulation or market-data input. Currency is a display unit and does not trigger exchange conversion.

Scope and limits

Returns and inflation are user assumptions, not predictions. The calculator does not establish an individual pension gap or a safe withdrawal rule and does not provide investment, pension or financial advice.
