A scientific calculator extends basic arithmetic with functions for powers, angles, logarithms and scientific notation.

Beyond basic arithmetic

Scientific calculation includes parentheses, powers, roots, logarithms and trigonometric functions alongside the four basic operations.

Order of operations matters: parentheses structure an expression, powers bind before multiplication and division, which bind before addition and subtraction.

Powers, roots and logarithms

Powers represent repeated multiplication; roots reverse that relationship. A logarithm asks which exponent produces a value from a given base.

Power and logarithm

log_b(x) = y exactly when b^y = x

Angles and notation

Trigonometric functions require the correct angle mode. Degrees and radians are different units, so the same number does not mean the same angle.

Scientific notation writes very large or small values as a factor times a power of ten. Engineering notation uses exponents in steps of three.

Read expressions carefully

Parentheses can change a result completely: 2 × (3 + 4) is 14, while 2 × 3 + 4 is 10.

Check the degree/radian setting before using trigonometric functions.

Numerical limits

The calculator evaluates numerical expressions; it is not a general symbolic equation solver. Some real-valued operations are undefined, such as division by zero.

Extra displayed decimal places do not create extra real-world precision.

How our scientific calculator works

Our tool parses mathematical expressions itself instead of executing user code. It supports precedence, parentheses, powers, roots, logarithms, trigonometric and other common functions, plus degree and radian modes.

Ans, memory and history support connected calculations within the session. Output can be formatted automatically, in scientific or engineering notation, or with fixed decimals.
