About IP subnets
CIDR states how many leading address bits form the network prefix. IPv4 also uses subnet and wildcard masks and normally reserves network and broadcast addresses; /31 and /32 are explicit exceptions. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, has no broadcast, and is calculated exactly with BigInt. Splitting is indexed and bounded, so huge address spaces are never materialized.
Frequently asked questions
What does /24 mean?
The first 24 IPv4 bits are the network prefix; eight bits remain for addresses.
Why does /31 have two usable addresses?
RFC 3021 defines both addresses as point-to-point endpoints.
Does IPv6 have broadcast?
No. IPv6 uses multicast instead of broadcast.
How many addresses are in an IPv6 /64?
Exactly 18,446,744,073,709,551,616.
Does this tool query my network?
No. All calculations are local and purely mathematical.
